Lunafacious - Julia Freier

Born in East Berlin in 1986 I never left the city for more than three consecutive days. Moreover I have lived in only three apartments and two neighborhoods in the East part of the city. I am raising my children to be compassionate anti-capitalists.

Graphic Design
I studied graphic design at Lette Verein in Berlin from 2010 to 2013. All my visual work is informed by this field. It's about transporting message through form as well as the balance of complex and simple shapes (e.g. an illustration plus text, white space and structure).
Examples of my graphic design work:
Illustration
I've made illustration - drawing, painting, collaging, creating pictures - since my childhood. The subject was part of my graphic design studies and before that I took some courses at the VHS. Inspiration is everywhere, on Tiktok and in music videos, all over my city and in my pretty home. I use analog pens and brushes and digital media as well. In Blender 3D I create 3D illustrations; on my phone I use apps like Vaporgram to make glitchy collages. And lately I've been getting into photography.
Sculpture
It's illustration with more dimension. I'm fascinated by shapes and textures and techniques and materials. Sometimes a piece of trash is inspiring, a sliver of shiny foil, a broken mirror. Amongst others I dabble with polymer clay, UV resin and many techniques from nail art.
Nail Art
It's a hobby but it's also art. Couple years ago I got hooked, now I do my own nails, sometimes my friends' and also press-on sets. It's painting and sculpture and applied beauty and body modification.
Makeup
Another visual art form. Somewhere in the 2010s I decided to not wear boring makeup anymore and experimenting means practice. At some point I got to opportunity to explore other people's faces, especially that of Gasher the 14th of Greenskull. Over the course of four years we worked together on their alien persona, incorporating elements of drag style and facing the challenges of green face paint.
Music
In 2020 I started my first experiments with making something like music on my computer. I got addicted.
Art Direction/ Project Management/ Storyboarding/ Editorial
I'm a hell of a planner. I'll make lists and tables and cards and I'll tell everybody what to do. At a photoshoot I'll stand next to the camera, directing the model into pre-planned poses and check if each strand of hair sits correctly. I worked with Clash Clash Bang Bang on three music videos and multiple photoshoots, deeply involved into the projects from early conception to storyboarding to managing a one-day shoot with over 20 extras and changing locations. For my Zines I shouldered the whole process of concept, acquiring artists, editing and printing plus organizing release events.
